Adults On the Spectrum meets this week

Monday, May 17th, 2010

The Adults on the Spectrum support group has been meeting since 2001 to give adults, age 18 and up with Asperger or High Functioning Autism, a place and time to meet others, exchange ideas, enjoy light refreshments and conversation and to support each other. Getting out to meet new people can be overwhelming and intimidating, but with this group, everyone understands that. Some of the participants can drive, some have jobs or go to college or take adult education classes, and some are looking for opportunities and ideas for navigating the adult world of work or college. The next meeting is this Wednesday, May 19th, 6:30 p.m. at our office. Join us!

How To Keep The Family Together When Things Are Coming Apart

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Autism Spectrum Disorders don’t affect only the individual, they affect the entire family.

Parents are stressed by trying to do all they can for their child with autism, PDD-NOS, or Asperger Syndrome, and after the diagnosis, there is a “grieving” process that most parents go through, when they find out that the life they’d envisioned for themselves and their child will definitely change. In addition, every person copes in a different way, and men and women very often have different means of managing and reacting.

Then there are siblings. Brothers and sisters may feel pushed aside or have their own issues that need to be addressed. The stakes are high. At a time when families need to communicate well and work together; they can find that they feel pulled apart instead.

To help families figure out how to work together and stay connected, our December Parenting Series workshop features Stephen Levine, PhD. (more…)
