Lose the Training Wheels
The Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin and the Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin are teaming up once again to sponsor Lose the Training Wheels programs in our area. In the summer of 2009, we will host 2 programs, June 29 through July 3 at Nicolet High School in Milwaukee County and July 6 though July 10 at Union Grove Elementary School in Racine county. This program is for individuals with disabilities ages 8 and up who have been unsuccessful in previous attempts to ride a 2 wheel bike. Nationally, the program is about 80% successful after the 5 day program. Many of our individuals will continue to need supervision and support while riding, but this enables families to ride together when a child has outgrown a trailer or trail-a-bike. The program costs $200, and includes a helmet for all participants. Download an application here.
We also need volunteers! All our participants have one to one support, and volunteers are asked to give 2 hours each day for five consecutive days. Download a volunteer application here.
