Autism Awareness Month

April is Autism Awareness month and April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day. To encourage all member states to take measures to raise awareness of autism in society, on December 18, 2007 the United Nations General Assembly supported a campaign to promote early diagnosis and intervention on autism and set April 2nd of each year as World Autism Awareness Day.

The Autism Society of America (ASA) has issued a call for global recognition of human rights for individuals with autism spectrum disorders in honor of World Autism Awareness Day.

Locally, we have several events planned:

Dr Glenis Benson spoke April 1st to nursing grand rounds at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, to help nursing staff identify the communicative intent of behavior.

Tuesday, April 21st - get the scoop on autism! at Mayfair Mall in partnership with Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream. Stop by from noon to 8pm for a free scoop of delicious Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and autism information. We will be distributing “Growing Up Together” and “Growing Up Together for Teens” brochures. This information was designed for typically-developing peers of children with autism. We will have music, celebrity scoopers, and surprise visitors throughout the day. Stop by and visit us.

Free Parent workshops on April 4th and April 22nd.

In collaboration with Milwaukee Center for Independence, SEDA Charter School, and WI FACETS, the Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin is planning an autism summit. Titled “Urban Action for Autism” this summit will be held at MCFI on April 29th from 8 am to noon. It will bring together stakeholders who will begin a dialog and create an action plan to address the need for more autism awareness in the city of Milwaukee, earlier diagnosis of children from low-income families, and the need for more services in underserved areas of the city.

For the board and staff at ASSEW, EVERY MONTH is Autism Awareness Month. Increasing awareness is a part of our mission.
