75 families are expected to celebrate the holiday season together, but it’s their commonality that often causes them to feel alone.

“When my son was diagnosed with autism, the doctor told us the incident rate was two in 10,000,” says the Autism Society of Southeast Wisconsin’s Executive Director Emily Levine. “Today, it’s one in 150.”

Autism Society of America National Conference

Good news for those of us in Wisconsin!  The Autism Society of America (ASA) is holding their national conference this year in St. Charles, Illinois, July 22-25, 2009.  The ASA conference offers a wide variety of speakers and exhibitors from around the world.  ASA is one of the few conferences that recognizes that people with autism grow up!  It is covers lifespan issues, not just school and early childhood problems.   There are many networking opportunities, and the finest array of autism experts - including many on the spectrum - will be gathered.

Autism Society of Wisconsin Annual Conference

Autism Society of Wisconsin (ASW) will be returning to the Kalahari Resort this May 7-9 for the annual conference.  The ASW puts on a wonderful state conference, with nationally recognized keynote speakers.  

  • Wednesday all-day pre-conference workshop will feature Michelle Garcia Winner, SLP.  Michelle is an expert on helping children on the spectrum develop social-communicative abilities and organizational skills.  Her workshops are also filled with her sense of humor and fun, engaging personality.
  • Friday Keynote is Scott Bellini, Ph.D., who has done extensive research on video modelling and social skills.
  • The Saturday Keynote speaker is Dr. Morton Ann Gernsbacher, who will speak about decreasing the stigma associated with an autism diagnosis.
  • There will be a wide variety of break out speakers on Friday and Saturday
  • Friday night talent show of youth on the spectrum and party - not to be missed!
  • The popular self-advocacy strand for individuals on the spectrum runs Fri-Sat  
  • Graduate education credits for educators are available for a nominal fee.
